Clubs & Activities

At the William Davies Middle School, we recognize the importance and are committed to educating the Whole Child. At this crucial time in our students’ lives, we not only feel that it is our responsibility to provide for their academic growth, but we are equally conscious of providing for their social, emotional and intellectual development. With this philosophy in mind, we have chosen to offer a variety of clubs and activities, as well as both interscholastic and intramural sports to guide them in this journey.

The Academic Team is for academically-oriented students to compete in interscholastic academic competitions. Interscholastic competitions will include Brain Brawl at St. Augustine Prep (October), MathCounts at Rowan University (January), and Think Day at Mainland Regional High School (March). (*Note: There are a limited number of team members able to attend the competitions. Team members will be selected based on a test prior to competitions.) Please note that 1st and 2nd Trimester grades and discipline reports will be reviewed for eligibility as the school year progresses.
Art Club: Ms. Brown
Art Club will meet on Thursday after school in room E101. This club is for students in 6th, 7th and 8th grade that enjoy drawing, painting and working with craft materials and clay. Projects will vary in experience and art form. Each year a portion of club sessions will be dedicated to working in the clay studio and throwing on the potter’s wheel. Please note that 1st , 2nd and 3rd Marking Period grades and discipline reports will be reviewed for eligibility as the school year progresses.
Environmental Club: Ms. Hooper-Jackson
The Davies Environmental Club raises awareness of environmental issues by empowering students to effect change by thinking globally, while acting locally. We believe that education + empowerment = effective change in our environment. Environmental Club students improve and maintain the on-site native plant flower gardens and community garden. In addition, the students complete school-wide projects and participate in community activities to learn how we can all make positive changes to protect our planet.
Graphic Arts Club: Mrs. Marandino
Graphic Arts Club will meet on selected Monday dates. Students will gain computer and drawing skills as they create works of art. We create a variety of creative projects which will progress in difficulty as students learn new skills. Students may use digital or camera images or create their own 2 dimensional and/or 3 dimensional images for projects. Please note that 1st and 2nd marking period grades and discipline reports will be reviewed for eligibility as the school year progresses.
Minecraft Club: Mrs. Steinen and Mrs. Jenner
Students will advance their knowledge of MinecraftEDU: enhance basic skills needed in the game; build upon mathematical, spatial, reasoning skills; and improve their ability to cooperate and collaborate in order to solve unique problems presented within the game.
Newsletter Club: Ms. Lilley
Our Newsletter club will be student-directed, student-written, and produced four times during the school year. Students will write articles, conduct surveys, administer interviews, and take photos. The club will meet approximately 20 times during the school year. The newsletters will be published electronically.
Spanish Club: Ms. Swan
Spanish Club is for all students who have an interest in anything Hispanic and will meet each Thursday that has an Activity Bus after school. The club will practice Spanish, learn about the different Spanish speaking countries, watch movies in Spanish, try new foods, make Hispanic crafts, play games and participate in service projects. You do not have to speak fluent Spanish to join.
Strategies/Sportsmanship Game Club: Mr. Gildiner
Those who participate in this club will have the opportunity to socialize with other students while playing strategic board games such as Chess, Checkers, Othello, Backgammon, and more.
If they do not know how to play the game, they will be taught. Sportsmanship will be a secondary skill taught in addition to having the opportunity to learn strategic games that will build problem skills as well.
Yearbook: Mr. Hannel and Mrs. Carter
The Yearbook is a special yearlong project that culminates in the publication of the William Davies Yearbook. Yearbook responsibilities include advertisement of the yearbook in the school and the promotion of book sales. Other responsibilities include planning the design and layout of the book, including cover and theme. Select students help with digital photography.
Yoga: Ms. Mckensie
The yoga class is a perfect way to unwind after a busy day at school. Students will learn challenging postures and breathing techniques that will help calm their minds and strengthen their bodies. Yoga has been shown to help students increase focus, self-esteem, and decrease anxiety. Yoga class is a great way to help deal with stress and it will impact your everyday lives in a positive way.
