The National Junior Honor Society is an organization which recognizes outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, service, and citizenship.  Members have a responsibility to continue demonstrating these qualities and may do so through a variety of projects, fundraisers, and school/community service.

NJHS Chapter By-Laws


Article 1:  Candidacy

Section 1: Membership is open to qualified 7th and 8th graders who have a cumulative GPA of 3.5

Section 2: To be inducted as a member of the NJHS candidates must also demonstrate outstanding character, leadership, citizenship and service.


Article 2:  Faculty Council

Section 1:  The school selection process adheres to the guidelines established by the national organization.

Section 2:  As such, students are recommended for selection into the NJHS by a Faculty Council.

Section 3:  The Faculty Council consists of the five faculty members and two alternate faculty members.

  1. The building principal will appoint the council members
  2. The Faculty Council will collect and evaluate information for each candidate and make recommendations
  3. Selection criteria collected by the school is confidential.


Article 3:  Identification Process

Section 1:  Students who qualify scholastically (a minimum 3.5 cumulative GPA)  will receive notification after the second trimester grading period.  

Section 2:  Students must be enrolled minimally for the first full trimester of the current school year.

Section 3:  A NJHS member who transfers from another school and brings a letter from their former principal or former chapter adviser shall be accepted automatically as a member in the William Davies Middle School Chapter.  A transfer member must meet chapter standards and complete the application process within one semester in order to retain membership.   

Section 4:  Failure to meet predetermined requirements of the aforementioned criteria may preclude students from selection.  Some examples are as follows:

  1. Students who have a discipline referral may not meet the criteria for leadership and character.
  2. Students who do not voluntarily participate in activities may not meet the criteria for service.
  3. Students who are not members of civic organizations may not meet the criteria for citizenship
  4. Students who do not hold office positions (i.e President, Vice President, etc) or positions of responsibility within organizations may not meet the criteria for leadership.  


Article 4:  Membership

Section 1:  The notification will include an application that they must complete within one month to be considered for membership into the NJHS.

  1. Each student must submit a letter of interest that includes details of involvement (i.e clubs, sports, organizations) that would satisfy the other criteria considered for induction (i.e. character, leadership, citizenship and service).
  2. Each student must submit 3 letters of reference (2 academic and 1 personal)
    1. Academic letters may be from present or former educators in the Hamilton Township School District.
    2. Their personal letter of reference should come from someone not directly related to the candidate.
  3. The selection of each member to the chapter shall be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council.  Prior to notification of any candidates, the chapter advisor shall review with the principal the results of the Faculty Council deliberation.


Article 5:  Discipline & Dismissal

Section 1:  Students will be evaluated each semester to make sure they continue to meet all chapter criteria.

Section 2:  Students with a GPA below 3.25 will receive a letter of probation and will be subject to a faculty council hearing to determine continued membership.

Section 3:  Students who choose not to participate in chapter activities may be dismissed as well.  

Section 4:  Students who have a discipline referral of any kind may be dismissed from the NJHS as this directly conflicts with the traits of Leadership and Character that are requirements of members.  In all cases of pending dismissal, a member shall have the right to a hearing before the Faculty Council (this is required under the due process law).

Section 5. For purposes of dismissal, a majority vote of the Faculty Council is required.

Section 6. A member who has been dismissed may appeal the decision of the Faculty Council to the principal and thereafter under the same rules for disciplinary appeals in the school district.

Section 7. NASSP shall hear no appeals in dismissal cases.

Section 8:  Members who resign or are dismissed are never again eligible for membership in NJHS or its benefits. Note: Refer to Article VIII, Section 5 regarding the permanent consequences for members when dismissed.


 

Upon acceptance into the William Davies chapter, the new members are inducted at a ceremony in May.
